A new virtual institute, named Potentiology, is dedicated to lifting the performance and capability of executives by an average of up to 30%.
The institute has mapped the psychological, biological and behavioural patterns of the world’s most successful people, including World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen, cellist and child prodigy, Yo-Yo Ma and imprisoned journalist, Peter Greste.
More than 25 of the world’s most revered academics contributed to the research and analysis that helped launch the institute.
Anthony Mitchell, co-founder and Chief Potential Officer of Bendelta, the business management consultancy which launched the institute, told L&D Professional about the factors that inspired the creation of Potentiology.
“We saw that the cyber-physical age requires a radical change in approach for organisations. The typical organisation of today has evolved too slowly from the industrial age model – far slower than, say, technology has evolved,” he said.
“There is urgent need for this to change. We wanted to create the first authoritative guide for turning human potential into business performance in the cyber-physical age. So for the last two years, that’s what we’ve been researching and designing.”
Mitchell said Bendelta saw that with Potentiology, it could markedly increase the realisation of human potential for the benefit of leaders, their people, their organisation, customers and society.
So what value might this research have for learning and development within organisations?
Mitchell said that Bendelta’s research proved that capabilities essential to leadership success, such as resilience, empathy and decision making, are “not innate”.
“That with the right methods, anyone can develop core leadership capabilities that reflect world-class standards. The potential this has for organisational learning and development is phenomenal,” he said.
“We discovered that, for the average organisation, there is around a 30% performance differential [compared to the industry average] for an organisation that is better at realising human potential, at both an individual and collective level. 30% is incredible.”
However, it can be even more than this, says Mitchell.
“The reality is that the difference between an organisation leap-frogging the sector and becoming irrelevant is the extent to which they are able to unlock and combine the potential of their people,” he said.
